$1.1 Million Grant Boosts Affordable Housing Choices

Alliance Embarks on Independent Living

July 1, 2013 – Alliance has been awarded a $1.1 million grant from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to create affordable housing for people with mental illness and development disabilities. Projects that focus on independent living were given top priority. A subcommittee of the Board of Directors is overseeing the creation of Alliance's Independent Living division, under the auspices of Alliance Real Estate Holdings, LLC, a subsidiary of Alliance created to acquire real property. Tenants will enter into a renter-landlord relationship with Alliance and assume all the rights and responsibilities of living independently. The lack of affordable housing options has been a significant barrier for people with disabilities working towards living independently. People ready to live on their own will now have the opportunity for greater independence, while still maintaining their community supports.
